Today I will …
thank the cashier.
What a difference a ‘have a great day’ or ‘thank you so much’ can make!
A couple months ago in The Netherlands, I acted a bit Canadian by thanking the cashier, saying hi and bye to her ánd wishing her a great day! She was so surprised she almost forgot to continue working. On my part, I almost forgot how in The Netherlands you don’t really have to say a lot to the cashier and that a lot of people even ignore the person as much as possible. It’s pretty normal, but I think it’s not ok, since some kind words can make such a positive difference!
It’s always nice to be noticed and having somebody who appreciates what you do. That’s exactly what you do when you thank the cashier! You and I also like to hear a ‘thank you’ or ‘well done’ when we hand in an assignment, finish a project or after having given a presentation. It’s such a small gesture, but can be a big boost for the receiver!
